he starts with 16 gallons... and has 4 gallons left...

that means that he used up 12 gallons...

the 12 gallons were burned over how many miles?... the resulting 'how many miles' is the # of miles he has driven

12 gallons / (0.03 gal/mile) = 400 miles

he has drive 400 miles...

400 miles

16 -4 = 0.03x

ok he had 16 gallons of gas
he has 4 left, meaning that he has used 12 gallons
so if his car burns 0.03 gallons of gas per mile {{he has a pretty d*** good car}} u would divide 12 by 0.03 which equals 400
