Can you back that statement up with any independent evidence that proves birthing in a hospital is safer??

I refer to planned home birth with trained medical staff in attendance.

Thankyou.

Julian's Mommy....

Go back and read that article again. It is actually entitled Homebirth: as safe as birth gets. It quotes those stats then goes on to state that home births attended by midwives have a neonatal death rate of 1.9/1000 compared to an MD in hospital with a WHOPPING 24.7/1000.

The original statistic had to take into account unplanned unattended home births, emergency births by definition. These births are often rapid and frequently pre-term, and obviously high risk.

Nice out-of-context quote above; the rest of it is:

"However, when the homebirth statistics are further broken down into who attended the birth, the picture changes dramatically. Direct Entry Midwives had the best outcomes with a death rate of 1.9 compared to CNM-attended births (2.9) or physicians -- D.O.'s (15.1) or M.D.'s (24.7). 2"

Ahem! She said 'with trained medical staff.' You know, like CNMs. The article's called "Homebirth: As Safe As Birth Gets."

Re. "so what would a midwife do?"

ASK ONE. Mine gave some very informative answers to all our questions about various emergency scenarios.

There weren't a whole pile that involved "Terrifying 911 call." Mostly, the equipment and training the midwives arrive with are enough; in the extremely rare cases they aren't, there's enough 'stabilising' going on that, well -- just how do people think "emergency c-section" works, anyway? An "emergency c-section" in a hospital is "within a half hour." Unless you live in an extremely isolated area, why worry?

None made me hesitate in planning a home birth at all. The only unresolved safety issue was "Will the living room floor support a birthing pool?" And we just had a home inspector in today for other reasons; he was also a father, and -- yeah, our floor's okay...

I _really_ hope this question gets an answer beyond BS 'ur babby cud die!'-style answers, or 'I don't get it -- I enjoy iatrogenic complications.'

Our second child was a home birth. Shortly after his birth, he turned blue. and we had to take him to the hospital. It was a 30 minute trip and nearly scared us to death. The hospital put him in an incubator and kept him for a few days. Everything turned out OK, but it was very frightening for us.

I would love to home birth, my mom is my midwife and I plan on trying for my 3rd pregnancy.
But, as far as her insurance is concerned, she's not allowed to do it.
You should also check with your insurance company because there was a ridiculous case in the midwest somewhere where the insurance co. wouldn't pay because she gave birth at home, against medical advise.
Best of luck!!

if you are not in any high risk categories, there should be no reason why you cannot birth at home. hospitals LOVE to intervene. they will poke, prod and push drugs on you. it is difficult to relax, rest or enjoy. I would have stayed home, but my husband was not comfortable w/ it. stay home. enjoy. it will be a beautiful experience. everyone I know who had done it, loved it.

if it weren't for getting an epidural I'd give birth at home. if there is a complication like breech, or low fetal heart rate personally I'd like to be at the hospital.

The death rate for babies born in the hospital was 5.6 and for those born at home was 11.1, which would seem to indicate that a hospital is a better bet for a baby's survival.

I do not get why anyone would want to have a baby at home, anything could go wrong and if you were at the hospital and needing surgery they would take you in asap so what would a midwife do? Hmm call 911 and you would be in the hospital anyhow? I prefer to go to the hospital.
