In my opinion, it's not having a back up plan. My family criticizes me constantly because I'm only in my early 20's but I'm constantly going over my life insurance and who gets the kids, etc etc etc with them. I even have written letters to them in a lock box in my house in case I die so they have something to read from me when they grow up. It's morbid and maybe a bit obsessive, but at least I know if I get killed on my way to class on Monday my kids won't be caught in a huge custody battle or burdened financially.

I will tell you what I found to be true by watching other parents and the end results.
You have got to allow your children to work around the house. Chores, tasks and generally be part of the master plan of being a family.
I have a few friends that did not give any chores to their kids (easier to do it themselves) and now the kids either won't work or don't know the first thing about keeping a job.
I am not a perfect parent but when my son was growing up I was trying to teach him that w/o working there are no payments. It is either work and survive or suffer the consequences.

You are VERY SENSIBLE and CARING to do that for your children .. so many do NOT have such a responsible parent. (PS -- did this myself for my own children ... but the reason was because I was on Active Duty with the Military at the time, and it was definitely MOST important to keep a plan in place in case of deployments or something happening ....)

I think that the WORST thing one can do is to have children like they show on those AWFUL Hollywood 'reality' shows (I had the misfortune to be subjected to a TV turned to "Real Housewives of Orange County" when I went out for a snack recently -- needless to say ... those 'kids' were irresponsible, nasty, rude, and just plain out of control idiots ... who SHOULD be in jail instead of running around like they do!). THAT is the WORST that a parent can do .. which is NOT parent their children.

The worst thing a parent can do against a child is not show it love.I know this personally.Every living human in this world needs love and attention.Look at all the ones that were left to fend for themselves...Get my drift?

Yep - we had one for our son before he was even born - and put it in writing with an attorney shortly after he was born. That was over 20 yrs ago - and he's an adult now. Thankfully we never needed all of that - but one never knows.

not spending enough quality time w/ them. my step-sister is a sahm, and is constantly in the car w/ her 3 kids going somewhere to spend $ on trivial crap and not spending anytime teaching her kids anything or just getting to know who they are, as little people w/ personalities and opinions.

Spoiling the kid because then they grow up with a sense of entitlement and probably end up being a shallow human being.

The worst thing to do to their child/children is to forget them and act as if they aren't alive.
