The monitor is black with a message "not operating system found"

I tried using the recovery cd that came with my HP pc, ang got this message:
Error-The hard disk was not found!
Recover was aborted
If you have a hard disk installed, the cables may be loose or the disk may not be initialized

I checked out the cables inside my pc, but did not find anything...how should I know if I am doing the right thing?
I also tried control key, and get the windows 98 startup menu:
1.Normal: did not work
2.Logged (Bootlog.TXT) :do not know what to do
3. Safe Mode: did not work
5.Command prompt only: do not know what to do
6.Safe Mode command prompt only: do not know what to do
I need my pc...I dont not want to use FDisk, I need my data please help!!!

I used de fdisk, as Mike suggested.This is what I got:

1a) Make sure HD is connected firmly to IDE cables inside (have you changed drives around or replaced recently?)
1b) Start BIOS, choose option to boot from CD first, then floppy, then HD.
2) Boot from original CD-ROM with Microsoft OS (Win98, WinXP)
3) Don't use fdisk up front unless you intend to wipe out all the information on that HD! Creating or removing partitions can remove data that you may want to recover.
4) Upon boot up from CD-ROM, the installation will ask for a partition or drive- hopefully you will see your HD identified and it may already detect an existing WIndows installation.
5) Try a repair installation first or insert a slave HD and copy via DOS prompt your files manually to the slave, then reformat, partition, and install fresh copy of OS.

Hmmm...
It's odd that the computer tells you that the "hard disk was not found" yet you are still able to get the custom boot options for Win98.
Are you using a windows start up disk to do this?
Most likely the hard drive or the IDE cable has gone bad.
You should try a new ribbon cable.
If that doesn't help, your best bet would be to bring it in to have it looked at. Most repair shops will have a good chance of recovering the data as long as the drive is not completely fried. Be prepared to spend at least $150 on the data recovery alone.

It is a hardware failure. The hard drive of your computer had reached the end of its life.
This is the reason you saw the message "Error-The hard disk
was not found".
If it is the MBR (Master Boot Reod) crashed, you are still able to recover with the recovery CD, It is appeared to be the hard drive failure, there is no way you can recover yourself.
Off course, there are professionals out there can help you with
the data recovery from your dead hard drive. But it's going to cost a fortune.
Recommendations:
1) If you have another computer, and you know how to take out the hard drive. Try move it over to another computer and connect it as a slave to see if it is accessible from another computer. If it does, then you can recover your data from there. If it doesn't, then this proves the HD is.....
2) Do not do anything yourself to further complicate the situation. Take the computer to a local computer shop like
CompUSA. Ask for an estimate to have the computer check out.

You can't.Do not go to an unauthorized site for downloading windows 98 because there are a lot of spyware out there which sneaks into your system follows you wherever you may go.PC's get viruses.Do not be a hero by downloading torrents.I'd suggest you to get it from a computer store.

At least now you will listen to us because this is why we tell you to back your system up. Now, listen again! With Windows98, you will get infected with a virus. Get rid of it and get a good open source operating system for free, such as an easy to use Kubuntu at www.kubuntu.org. However, it sounds like, if you have your hard drive installed correctly, that it is fried and you need a new hard drive. Just dont make the mistake of buying another Windows CD that costs several hundred bucks when you can get a Kubuntu for free, and it is better.

Do you have a 1.44mb Bootable Floppy? If so try booting off of that. Once booted you should be able to get to the command prompt. Once there type typing:
C:
If you get to the C: prompt then the HDD is there. IF you get an error message then HDD controller can not find your drive.

Use Fdisk to view the partition information, this wont harm your data and will quickly tell you if the hard disk is there.
You can try loading the BIOS default or failsafe settings

try this;;;;unplug the wide data cable from the hard drive(Not The Power Wire),and turn on the computer for about eight seconds;;;shut the computer off and plug the drive back in;;(be careful not to bend the pins)turn on the computer and see what happens..
