I think it is because when my Grandparents came here from Sweden & Ireland, they promptly learned to speak English and wanted to become citizens. They took menial jobs (seamstress, janitor) but gradually bettered themselves, and wanted to become Americans. They never would of taken a handout or expected the rest of the US to learn to speak their language. I think that is why people have a grudge against Mexicans. If they want to remain Mexicans, they need to go back to Mexico, if they want to become Americans, they need to act like an American. Pay taxes, vote, pay their own medical bills, learn to speak English, etc.

Sue Quinn has it right. Learn the language, pay taxes, pay the bills... and welcome home. I don't appreciate my kids having to learn Spanish at school as a REQUIREMENT just so they can say hi to their neighbors. And if you really want to be a citizen, do it the legal way. I've got no prob with legal immigrants. It's the illegal immigrants that bother me. My great grand pappy had his green card... and now we all pay taxes and social security and speak English (although some polish foods don't translate, so excuse me if I have halluski for dinner once in a while). Can the same be said for the illegal immigrant population from Mexico?

because, they were here before us (along with the 'native americans') and they are part of the populus we kicked out. (at least in the south west)

oh wait, it's all the competition for jobs.... there is a huge line of legal americans trying to get jobs out in the fields tending the grapes for all the high end wines, and tending the produce fields, harvesting crops and so on...

it was a fear tactic planted in our minds by the media

I hope the sarcasm bleeds through where it's supposed to...

I think the simple answer is that every new wave of immigrants is hated. There are always plausible-sounding raionalizations, of course, because any excuse is OK to avoid saying "..because I'm a schmuck"

History repeats itself and we will never learn from it because it isn't taught very much in the schools.

Our ancestors came here and made a home. Mexicans have a home. If they don't like their home change it don't come and take advantage of our home.
