The five rings were originally designed in 1913 by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games. There were two symbols meant to be displayed by the six colors of the flag. The five rings were to represent the five continents (the America's were deemed one continent) and to demonstrate the willingness to engage in healthy competition.
The six colors of the flag; blue, yellow, black, green, red, and the white background, where to represent the flags of the world. At the time of the flag's creation, at least one of those colors appeared on every national flag.
