I'm trying to install AVG internet security that I had bought and when I was trying to get it installed, this is what popped up:

Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Classes\AVG.Kernel: creating registry key....
Access is denied. (5)

Does anyone know what that means or how I can get this to install properly? I've already contacted the company but all I got was automated responses I've been trying to get a real live operator to help. But if anyone is familiar with this, please help me!!

Looks like maybe you used a trial version of the software and it saved a registry entry that shows it may have expired. My first suggestion would be to go to the website for your software and check out their knowledge base. Chances are others have had the same problem and they may have resolved it there. If that doen't work try calling their tech support. A person, who speeks clear english, may be able to walk you through removing the registery entries so you can install it.

when you first ever started the computer it asked you to enter an administrator password when you rembember it write it down.

(this is all left click)
start>control panel>user accounts>(user accounts)>change the way users log on and off>click the bold lettering Use the welcome screen>apply options>close all programs running>start>log off>log off>in the top box (user name) type administrator (in loweof case)>in the box underneath type the password you wrote down on the piece of paper at the start of this process then push enter or click OK> at this point the computer my freeze for a minute this is nothing to worry about the computer is loading the new settings> when it has loaded you will see a user you have never seen before.
DO NOT PERSONALIZE THE USER if you do you could stuff up the computer. now download the sofware and log off.

log back on your user and go to start>control panel>user accounts>(user accounts)>change the way users log on and off>click the bold text use the welcome screen>apply options>close all the dialog boxes and restart the computer.

NOTE: never use the administrator account again.

I would venture a guess that your profile is not allowed to edit the registry.

Are you set up to be the administrator of your computer?

Hi Granny,

You have to have administrative privileges to install the program. Sign on as administrator and try your installation.

yes, hillary's daughter turned out to be a damn genious at computer science and you can reach her at Stanford. But if she is busy call me. I am pretty damn clever, too. Strart my filing a complaint with the FTC. They are online and have a handy dandy complaint form easy to fill out.

are you logged in as administrator? sounds like you don't have authority to install programs
