My first job was as a cashier back in the days before the cash registers would calculate the change for you. There is nothing to worry about, I really liked my cashier job. You get to be friendly and talk to people all day long, and the boss will love you for it. Sure beats stocking shelves

Your cash register will calculate the change for you, but here is a quick lesson on how to give change to the customer. Lets say the change is $14.37.

from the cash drawer remove .37 cents and put it in the palm of your hand, then pull out a 10 and 4 ones. Doing it in this order helps with the next step.

"thank you. Your change is fourteen dollars and thirty seven cents."

"here's 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 25, 35, 36, 37. Please come again." Each time you count put the bill or coin in the customers hand. With practice this will come fast and quick.

By doing this you've double counted your money and by counting it to the customer you have proven the amount is correct to him and you. You'll never go wrong.

I can't imagine you get stuck with a cash register that doesn't calculate change for you, but if you can count by 1's (1,2,3,4,5,etc) 5's (5,10,15,20) 10's (10,20,30,40,) and 25's (25,50,75,100) its really simple to make change in your head. Here's how: Lets say the total is $5.33 and the customer gives you $20.

starting with the pennies count in you head to the nearest 5 or 10. In this case say to yourself 5.34, 5.35. Each time putting a penny in your hand. Next count to the nearest number that divides by 25. So say to yourself 5.40, put a nickle in your hand, 5.50, put a dime in your hand. Now count to the nearest dollar. Say 5.75, 6.00 put a quarter in your hand each time.

Now you essentially repeat the process with the paper. Count to the nearest 5 or 10. So to yourself count 7, 8, 9, 10 each time putting a dollar bill in your hand. Next count 20 and put a ten dollar bill in your hand. You now hold the correct change in your hand. Count it back to the customer like this "thank you, here is your change 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 25, 50, 60, 65, 66, 67." Your customer will get the correct change and all you had to do was count, not a single mental gymnastic required.

Good Luck!

Just take it slow, the important thing is being accurate. I'm sure you'll do fine. I used to be really nervous about things like that too when I worked at Mervyn's. It actually can be pretty fun, just make sure that you aren't being distracted when you are making change, because that is when I usually messed up.
You could always practice a little if you're still feeling really nervous about it. Just grab some pocket change/bills and pick a random number. Good luck with your first job, and have fun!

If you're working at Whataburger, then you're doomed; they make you do the math in your head.

I would think pretty much all stores have cash registers that tell you the amount to give once you punch in the amount that the customer has given you. I was a bit freaked out as well, but I had one of the managers supervising me while I took my first customer.

It's not so bad, you'll get the hang of it after a day.

my first job was also as a casher. my advice is to relax because you will do fine. the cash register tells you how much change to give so take your time and count it back to the customer. chances are, you will make a mistake here and there but you will also learn from any mistakes you make. just remember to smile and talk to people and you will enjoy your job much more!

Relax. Have confidence in yourself. The cash register will tell you the exact change and just make sure you hand the customer that amount.

You'll be okay. Just take your time. The cash register will tell you how much to give back to the customer. After you take it out of the drawer, count it back to the customer.

Have someone practice w/you the correct way to count change back. If the register already tells you what change to give back then it will be really easy. don't worry. you will be fine. keep your head up and smile!

dont take the job if ur not confident or u dont feel good about it. ask them if they can have u be a stocker or do something else like push carts. im sure they would train u, and if u make mistakes, that would be ok, but if ur really scared dont take the job.

i am sure you will be okay. Just relax and just concentrate on what you are doing. As far as change goes, double count if you need to. There is no shame in doing that.
