College and University are the same thing (in the U.S.) Colleges are usually smaller than universities.
If you want to be a doctor you have to get a Pre-med degree from college before you can go to medical school.
If you want to do something in astronomy you will need a college degree before you can go to graduate school.

Some people go to 2 year colleges (receive their associate's degree) and then transfer to a 4 year college, but there really is not difference between the 2.

Progression of degrees: Associates, Bachelor's, Master's, Doctorate.

These words are often used interchangably, but they are slightly different. A college is school that usually focuses on a certain area, while a university may be made up of several colleges.
For example, UCLA is a university that incorporates several colleges - the College of Letters & Science, the School of Medicine, the College of Theater & Performing Arts, the Law School, etc. However, Pomona College also offers many of these same courses, but tends to focus more in the liberal arts (humanities and math and science), and its sister schools like Harvey Mudd and Claremont-McKenna are separate colleges, but they don't form an official university.

So, after high school, I went straight to a college (of Letters & Science) at a university (UCLA).
You may be confused between community colleges (which usually last for two years and offer an Associate's Degree) and regualr colleges (which last for four years and offer a Bachelor's Degree. Some people attend a community college for a few years and then transfer to a regular college at a big university - this helps them satisfy general requirements, save money, and ease into the demanding level of college work.

If you want to become a doctor or lawyer, you need to attend graduate school - after you complete your four-year Bachelor's degree, you then go on to a graduate school (medical, law, business, etc) and get an advanced degree (Ph.D., Master's, M.D., J.D.). This usually takes two to four years. I haven't heard of anyone ever getting a graduate degree without first earning a university degree, so it's very unlikely.

Astronomy is available at the college/university level. It's a popular choice to satisfy the general science requirement.

A university is made up of colleges. A college is a specific school, such as "college of engineering," but a university houses several different colleges. There are also two or four year colleges which are not part of universities, and only offer undergraduate degrees. So you options could be
two-year college = associate degree
four-year college = bachelors degree
four-year college within a university = bachelors degree

after that you can get a graduate degree (MD, PhD) at a graduate school at a university

The difference between a college and a university is that a college is associated with one major group of studies (like Liberal Arts and Sciences or Education). A university has many different types of programs (which they call colleges). For example, the University of ____ (wherever) has a College of Education, College of Fine Arts etc. Colleges are also smaller because there is only one major category. It doesn't matter which one you go to first it just depends on what you want to do. If you want to major in Astronomy and you know a college that focuses on Liberal Arts and Sciences you can go there or a university. Its up to you what you want to do. I really hope that this helps you.

That all depends on a the country you're speaking of. In the US, a "college" is an institution of higher learning that awards degrees in specific areas (i.e. Business, Nursing, etc.), whereas a "university" is an entire educational facility made up of multiple colleges. After high school, you can either go to a community college (which usually only award 2yr degrees), a Junior College (which is a 2yr school), a "college" (like Darmouth), or a "university" (like Yale).

Basically (in the US) the term "College" just means the next phase of education after high school (like "high school" is the next phase of education after "Junior High" or "Middle School").

Yes, when you take medical courses "like doctor", you go to "college" first and get a degree usually centering in something "pre-med" (which stands for "pre medical school". After you've gotten that degree, you then head off to medical school.

Yes, in order to be an Astronomer, you have to go to college and get a degree in Astronomy or Physics.

university typically means the entire school while colleges typically make up the university. Now some schools offer degrees in business, engineering, education, agriculture, etc
It's just a way for the university to break up majors

After high school you could choose to work, join the military, or go to school. There are a few choices for school. You could go to a tech or trade school, a community college or a 4 year university

In your example college would be a two year community college where you would get an A.A or A.S. degree If you are looking to save some bucks go to the college to do all your lower course work then transfer to the university where you can get you BA, BS, MA, PhD

OK here is the deal. Either way you go is great. But it what you are looking for in your college career. If you want to graduate in 4-41/2 years go to a university. If you want to go to a college aka state school it will take you longer to finish if you finish at all. Colleges party way harder and have more fun than universities, such as Arizona State College, as apposed to University of Arizona which is filled with boring intellectuals who wouldn't know a good time if it hit them in the ***! Go to a college and have fun while you are young...Just make sure you graduate and you are set for life!
