I went to public school K-12 (granted, it was a while ago), and never prayed in school. I hear a lot of banter about bringing prayer back into public schools. When/where did that ever happen?

School-sponsored prayer in public schools was ruled unconstitutional by the U.S. Supreme Court in two decisions issued by the Warren Court: Engel v. Vitale in 1962; and Abington Township School District v. Schempp in 1964.

Of course it happened. If it didn't happen then there would have been no need for the Supreme Court to declare that it is unconstitutional when it DOES happen.

The Supreme Court's decision on that subject was in 1962 and the case had come out of the state of New York.

And, BTW, I haven't heard any "banter" about bringing prayer back into public schools for at least a dozen years or so.

When I was in high school my homeroom teacher started the day with a student reading from the Bible and then a prayer, I refused and got a week of after school detention, and I was a Christian at the time but felt very uncomfortable because I was shy.

Well if you ask me I don't know why people make such a big deal over school prayer. If it draws kids away from their own religion then the kids must not have had much faith in the first place.

I myself don't know when or where it happens but granted that I'm in 8th grade we still say the pledge of Allegiance (which is more patriotic then religious!)

In the 1950's in Maple Heights, Ohio we started almost every day with a short prayer.

Maybe it happened in the 1930s but not in the 50s or 60s.

prayer was allowed in schools, and where I went to school at, which was also a while ago, we prayed in the mornings and at sporting games, graduations, our Christams program, and we were allowed to prayer out loud in the cafeteria before we ate.

Yes. Horace Mann's vision was to combat the prevalence of Catholic schools by using public dollars to replace them with, in essence, Protestant schools. Bible reading was a key component of his vision.

when I was a kid, we opened our lunch hour with a prayer. no one invoked jesus, but they did call on the creator.

Every thanksgiving our principal read the prayer of thanksgiving uttered so long ago.
