Girlfriend, calling her a lover makes her sound as if she is a bit on the side.

Girlfriend unless you're already in an established committed relationship. Lover makes it sound like all she is to you is sex. But if she's already secure in the fact that you're together for other reasons, and you've been together for a while, then lover can be rather sexy.

i would reckon girlfriend would be better off than lover. Its daft someone calling u a lover but i would prefer 2 be called girlfriend if i went out with someone

To say "lover" sounds like all she's good for is sex and that she borders on being a trollup or worse...to say girlfriend sounds committed as well as more interesting, if not respectful.
