If you're placing it in while your computer is on that's probably one reason...But I doubt your doing that.

When it comes to macs they are VERY difficult for upgrading. They have almost no upgrade path what so ever unless your talking about the new intel mac pros. If you do plan to upgrade you have to make sure you buy the right ram just like any other computer. Just buying any 512 mb ram stick and popping it into a computer won't work. You have to make sure you're putting in the correct type. If you have no idea what type of ram you bought or what type of ram your mac uses...Take your computer into a mac store and they should be able to tell you. You can then use that to either buy one from mac (probably overpriced)...Or look around on the internet for a generic (bottom of the barrel ram) stick with the right specifications that will work with your G3.
