My wife had her second trimester test taken last week. This week they called her and told her that we have a 1 in 10 chance that our baby will develop trisomy 18. We are both freaking out but know that's it's only a screening, and that there is a 90% chance the baby will be absolutely fine. We are not doing the amnio test but will wait till the 19th week to do a high-tech ultrasound.

Has anymore been through this before?

I decided not to take these test just for this reason. The odds your baby will have this is very slim. They are 9 out of 10 times incorrect and just cause parents stress. Try not to worry your baby is going to be perfect. They really should not offer test like this that are not 100%. Good call denying the amnio since they can cause miscarriage. The high tech ultrasounds are still not 100% so keep that in mind in case they still give you unwanted news. Also, a friend of mine had these tests done as well. Her son was testing positive for down syndrom. The doctors pleaded with her to abort and she did not. She had a healthy little boy with no problems what so ever. Doctors are not always right. Think positive and I will pray for the best for you and your wife. Most of all Congratulations on your upcoming parenthood.

I haven't personally but I haven't gotten my results back yet. Hopefully they will come next week. My cousin had some abnormalities shown, I think it was downs syndrome, so they did the amnio and all these other tests and eventually concluded all was fine. Her baby was born healthy and beautiful. How old is your wife? My cousin is 33 so the chances are a little higher for her whereas I'm 24 so I'm not as worried. I'd also wait until the ultrasound if I were you and then decide whether or not the amnio is necessary. Good luck!

I know so many people that have been through the same thing my best friend just last year. The testing they do like the one I refused called the triple screening (it's called different things) comes back with more false positives than does an other test. It is sucha hard thing to go through a pregnancy worried out or your mind that soemthing will be wrong with your child. Below is a website that you can veiw about trisomy 18. Maybe this will help in answering your questions. The best of luck to you your wife and that little bundle she is carrying. I hope things turn out the best for you!!!

before i had that screening i was freaking out but everyone was telling me that because of my age, i had nothing to worry about. after i had it done, the results came back for down syndrome, trisomy 18/21 as negative and i would have a 1 in 10,000 chance of it. which from what i've heard from other women is really really low, considering my age (i'm 28). but had i known, i wouldn't have taken this test because of the stress it caused. best thing to do is relax. and i wouldn't want to do the amnio testing either - NO THANK YOU! ugh. good luck on your pregnancy and i hope everything works out well for the baby and yourselves!!!!

We didn't do the testing with my first two children, because we didn't want to sit up at night worrying about the baby. With my third, the ultrasound detected more and larger than normal Choroid Plexus Cysts, which can happen with chromosome disorders. We went through with the screening tests and more ultrasounds with specialists, and the baby was born perfectly healthy. My advice, after going through this, is to calm down and wait for your next screening. I'm sure that things will turn out fine. The added stress is not something you and your wife need right now. As hard as it is not to worry, it is out of your hands. I hope everything works out for you!

hi when i was 16 weeks i had my blood test results back saying i had a 1in 170 chance of having a baby with downs.
i know this sound silly compared to 1 in 10 but i am only 21 and my odds dropped fom 1 in 2000 to this thats quite a lot.
me and my partner were devastated as never expected this to ever happen to us like you do.
as it was we decided not to have the amnio offered as there was a high risk of miscarrying. for weeks it played on the back of my mind.
when i was 25 weeks i decided i wanted to have a 4d scan done so payed £200 went private it was amazing and by chance the midwife doing the scan was a specalist in fetuses with chromosone defects. we could see by our little boys face he look absolutley fine but to be sure we asked the midwifes advise explain our situation she reasured us he look perfectly healthy and that she guarenteed he dosent have downs.
this was such a releif to us and at last i could enjoy my pregnancy again.
im now 31 weeks and im so glad now i never had the amnio as the thought of causing miscarrage to our healthy baby makes me feel sick and i shall not be having this blood test in future pregnancys as the stress and worry isnt worth it.
im sure your little baby is fine doctors don't know what they do to couples when they break news like this especially when like you said theres 90% chance your baby is healthy.
all i can advise is follow your gut feeling everyone was telling me to have the amnio but somethin was telling me not to.
anyway good luck with eveything congrats on your little baby it will all work out fine.

protien on your urine would not recommend there is something incorrect with the toddler, it ability that your kidneys arent functioning as much as par. i'm a diabetic and pregnant with my 2d, they verify me for protein as quickly as a week. in the event that they toddler looks good and is doing nicely then attempt to loosen up and enjoy it. and be sure you drink a marvelous type of water
