There are many types of vets depending on what species of animal you want to work with, or what type of procedures you want to do. You can be a small animal vet, working mainly with cats and dogs and doing routine things like vaccinations and routine surgeries, or if you prefer horses and cattle you can specialize in large animal medicine and work with them. You can also work in the veterinary field without being a vet. You could become a veterinary technician (kinda like an animal nurse), or become a veterinary assistant which in most cases does not involve going to college. In my opinion (and this varies by vet and clinics) veterinary technicians deal more hands-on with the animals day to day than vets (again, just my opinion in general, I know many vets that are very hands-on.) If you are looking for a college, find one that offers pre-vet, go through the classes, and then decide what area you want to specialize in. There are also colleges that offer veterinary technician courses.

First you go to college and finish that then you go to a specialized vet school.
Ames Iwoa has one as does Kansas University.
You have to be very smart and have very good grades to get in.
Check out what pre requisites you need and find out what college classes you need to take for vet school. It is about 8 years worth of school and then you intern.

There is of course the regular vet that your pets visit for vaccinations and basic procedures like spaying and neutering. There is also an array of specialists, like ophthalmology, osteo (bone), oncology (cancer) and just about as many as there are people Dr.s. Good luck, it's a tough course to be accepted to.
