I am looking for a guitar for my son. He is 3-- so any guitar for a 3-5 year old would be awesome.

I'm looking for a real guitar. with strings. I don't care if its acoustic or electric.

I don't want a crappy guitar either-- I'm willing to spend the money, it's for his birthday.

thanks!

Another place to look would be a local pawn shop - they usually have loads of guitars at bargain prices.

Yep, just get a regular set of strings. After you put them on the guitar you need to cut the ends off with wire cutters. When you string the guitar put the string through the peg far enough so that the string has a couple inches of slack along the fretboard (you should be able to lift the string just a couple inches off the fretboard). Then turn the tuning peg to tighten the string. It should only wrap around the tuning post a few times. Then snip off the excess string. If the strings are so long that the loose end is in the way as you're tuning, you can snip the end off before tuning, but be careful not to cut it too short. I'd suggest using light gauge strings as well. They're easier on the fingers and put less tension on the neck and bridge of the guitar.

Those "First Act" small guitars are real guitars. They are at Wal mart, etc. They are not toys, but they are not the 'best' guitar in the world. That's all I would get for a 3-year old.

If you really really really want to get something special, that a 3-year old would not appreciate, and is not so bad that if/when he destroys it you won't be out too much money.... dare I say it... a Martin Backpacker guitar (check http://www.musiciansfriend.com/product/Martin-?sku=512392 ) is a real guitar, with a real good tone, and it is small, and it is not *too* expensive.

While Target and Wal-Mart are good for most things, I wouldn't trust them for guitars. It's kind of hit-or-miss with them. I have a friend who bought a guitar at Wal-Mart, and it's been a great one. But, if you're really looking for quality, I would go to a music store that sells nothing but instruments, accessories, you know, things like that. Ask a sales associate about what they have as far as children's guitars go, and if the store doesn't have any, they should be able to send you to some place better than Target or Wal-Mart.

I hope I was helpful and best of luck to your son with his playing. I wish I had started so young, maybe then I'd be better now...lol :)

Some WalMarts and Targets carry a nice brand of guitar for children. If you can't find them in your area try calling a guitar supply store and see if they know where you could pick one up locally!
