As you know, the Western Ghats run along the western edge of the Deccan Plateau, and separate the plateau from a narrow coastal plain along the Arabian Sea. This mountain range runs approximately 1600 km through the states of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala ending at Cape Comorin or Kanyakumari, the southern tip of the Indian peninsula.
This range is also known as the Sahyadri mountains in Maharashtra and Karnataka, Anaimalai andNilgiri hills in Tamilnadu, and Malabar region and Agastya Malai in Kerala.
Higher peaks occur in the northern section of the range in Maharashtra, notably Kalsubai 1646 m (5427 ft), Mahabaleshwar 1438 m (4710 ft), Taramati and Harishchandragad 1424 m (4691 ft).
In southwest Karnataka there is Kudremukh at 1862 m (6,109 ft), Mullayanagiri at 1925 m (6,317 ft). The Western Ghats of Maharashtra spread from the Satpura Range to the north, and continues south past Goa to Karnataka. The major hill range of the sector is Sayadhri range.
The Biligirirangans southeast of Mysore in Karnataka, meet the Shevaroys (Servarayan range) and Tirumala range farther east, linking the Western Ghats to the Eastern Ghats. Smaller ranges, including the Nilgiri Hills (with Doddabetta being the highest peak at 2623 m) are in northwestern Tamil Nadu.
In the southern part of the range in Kerala, Ana Mudi 2695 m (8,842 ft) is the highest peak in the Western Ghats. Chembra Peak 2100 m, Banasura Peak 2073 m and Vellarimala 2200 m are also in Kerala.
Therefore, Ana Mudi at 8842 ft. is the highest peak of the Western Ghats on the whole.
