If I'm working for a company through a temp agency -- do I tell the temp agency when I no longer want the job, or do i tell the company that I'm really working for?

Do you mean you don't want to work for the client any more, or the agency any more?

If it's the client, tell the agency, and why.

If it's the agency, finish up your week, and put in your notice.

Don't burn bridges. It's a small world out there.

Quitting a steady job to work at a temp agency would not be a smart decision. Business has virtually dried up at temp agencies over the last few years. Businesses are not hiring temps for the most part so the likelihood of your husband getting a full time work assignment would be slim to remote. Temp agencies only hire ideal candidates and they look for the individual with the lowest pay rate. Temp jobs have no stability. You might start a 3 month assignment and only last 3 days. Workers are cut at random because the company does not care who fills the position. Employers do not generally go through a temp agency when looking for a permanent employee. Your husband is lucky to have a job now. He may not have as many hours as you would like, but at least he's working. Quitting that job would not be a smart decision unless he gets a better job offer. Hoping to land a full time position through a temp agency is not realistic considering how bad the economy is.

Both. Tell the temp agency that you're wanting to quit / or find something different and see what they have to say. You may get pulled out of the position, without it looking like you are the bad guy. No sense in burning bridges! But, if you're just wanting to quit... quit! It's really easy, just not that easy to make up excuses when you're out there looking for work again.

You should notify the temp agency first. Be prepared to work out a notice. Sometimes they will ask you to stay until the find a replacement - if it is a reasonable time frame - you should be willing to do that for them. I would also ask their advise about informing their client. Some like to do it themselves and some will let you handle it.

But work out your notice - you never know when you might need them again.

both - the temp firm is your employer, but it is courteous to tell the company that you are no longer going to be working there. the temp firm will have to find a replacement for you.

Tell your agency that you would like to be placed someplace else. They shouldn't have a problem with that. Be honest with them and tell them what your interested in. They should be able to place you someplace else. (otherwise try another agency)

Good luck!
