Let me reverse the question: How do you know it isn't working when you aren't running the software to view the image?
Think of a stereo without speakers. No matter how much you turn up the volume, nothing comes out. In this case, the webcam is the stereo and the viewing software the speakers.
I would suggest that it is probably happily waiting for some software to accept what it has to offer -- but nobody is watching.
If you want to record images or whatever, you need to let the software and the webcam talk to each other...

Can you run a TV without half the wires plugged into it? You need the Webcam program to run the Webcam thats just the way it is.

The webcam is merely an input device... if you don't have software running to use the input, there is no need for the device to be on.
Think of it like a modem... if you aren't dialing in to a connection, the modem just sits there idle.
Hope this helps!

information superhighway-cams would properly be accessed remotely from the internet, truthfully they are in a position to be hacked and controlled by using somebody else. this can be the case with why it is turning on by using itself. save a submit it observe or a chew of electric tape of the cam so if somebody is getting access to it they won't be waiting to work out something. My cam is often lined

isn't that the purpose? do you want to forget about the cam in your room and pull off an american pie movie sceen???? now seriously, why do you need it on when your not using the software? if so, minimize the application and forget about it, but be sure to send us the link to view it.

Its a bit like a light switch. The bulb doesn't come on until you flip the switch.
