Use a wooden board. For the illusion of the ideomotor effect to work you need to hold the planchette under some tension. For this reason it's best to have 2 or 3 people working together. It also increases the odds that at least one of you is going to be suggestable enough to let your subconscious take over (or enough of a prankster to make stuff up).

Okay first this was actully done in the early centuries, it works depending on your beliefs your openess, and the area you use it in, and the background. These have been dangerous and deadly. I wouldnt use them for pranks, hell i wouldnt use them. THey are a portal that allows things to bridge the gape between our planes. But set it up like the one guys says and make sure you can break it so sever the connection if one is made.

You don't want to make one. Parker Brothers made them until they got sued when some kids went suicidal. Don't screw with stuff you don't completely understand. Some friends of mine started playing around with one and got bored because it didn't work. One guy realized it wasn't going to do anything and made it move and made stuff up. Then he got on it by himself and something got him-literally. He started acting all weird and predicted a couple of our friend's deaths. He married a strange woman who took all his money and skipped town. He will never be the same. Don't mess with one at all...people die.
