Many blue ribband companies encourage gap years. You get offered a job which is delayed for one year. The gap lets you see the real world before committing yourself to employment.
Other students take a gap year before looking for work. Naturally it’s at the students own expense. The benefit is the government knowing that one year of population is removed from the job scene and dole office.
Hopefully those taking gap years will be able to write with correct sentence construction and correct spelling. If they can’t then perhaps they should consider taking remedial lesson rather than a gap year.

They're lazy and trying to get out of working.

Doesn't matter how many degrees you have, you still have to go out and earn money.
