Peace arrives when the victor of a military battle says it should.
In theory....
The international military struggle is a cycle of violence that has existed for ten thousand years. For a series of reasons this human race most likely has another thousand years at least before we begin to abhor war.
So settle in - world peace is a long way off.
This middle east skirmish is almost a non-event in the big scheme of things.
----------
had to come back and add a serious are you freakin nuts to the answer posted by Sheepdog.......You are willfully perpetuating a lie!!!
Your understanding of global policy is about 500 years outdated. Seriously that vacuum speech likely had eyes rolling in the actual court of the Spanish monarchy.
Are lands such as Canada, all the scandanavian countries, Australia, Mexico, western Europe, most of south America, China, Japan, just to name a few - any second now going to be overrun by the mongolion hordes, according to your insane world view, yes.... Why haven't these nations engaged in battles of conquest in so long? Why has Russian and America been the sole imperialist powers for the last 50 years?
The reason war perpetuates is exactly because of people like Sheepdog who dream up wild *** ways to legitimize it while people like cheney dream up ways to profit off of it.
Until one of those two things ceases - we shall have wars.

The war in Iraq used to seem so far from me. That was until I met my fiance. He has just received an order warning for deployment. We were supposed to be married in a few months. Within these last few weeks I have experienced a range of emotions. Why doesn't Bush send a loved one over to fight? Veterans are going back for 2 and 3 sometimes 4 tours and for what? More are dying there and their families here. I recently received a war time prayer book. I thought it would be like a bible. It was all propaganda telling me that it was O.k. that we are at war. It says God is not a dictator. I thought this was supposed to bring me comfort.....the violence over there is not breeding peace...only death....i agree with you....I support our troops and want them HOME

Absolutely, peace can come from fighting.
The latin phrase, "Si vis pacem, para bellum", translates roughly as, "If you want peace, prepare for war." It does NOT mean that, as YOU put it, "the only way peace can exist is through war."
Peace is PRESERVED, or RESTORED by a strong military that is willing and able to DETER or DESTROY those forces which would subjugate or exterminate our society.
There is another saying that goes, "Nature abhors a vacuum." If there is an absence of strength (in this case, a non-existent military force), a foreign army will fill that void--usually to the detriment of the indigenous people.
Let me put it in terms that even a liberal could understand.
In the 1500's, Spain had the largest army and navy in the world. They had guns, they had cannon, they had steel swords and halberds, they had armor. In contrast, the superior numbers of Incas, Mayans and Aztecs in Central and South America had rocks, stone clubs, primitive arrows and loincloths.
We all know what happened. And I'll even put it in your liberal lexicon. "Evil whitey raped their women, slaughtered their men, stole their gold and totally fcuked up a green utopian society where the sun smiled, the flowers sang and good natured jungle creatures frolicked in harmony with those noble savages."
But let me ask you this. What if every Native American warrior carried an Uzi or AK-47? How might the Spaniards have regarded the indigenous peoples, had they been faced with superior firepower? Would they have been more respectful? Would they have offered goods in trade for the natives' gold? Would those native peoples be around today, in larger numbers?
Only a moron would dispute the fact that they would.
Does violence beget violence? It damn well better. Because if we, AMERICANS, are attacked, the response must be brutal, overwhelming and unmerciful. Currently, thanks to people like YOU, it has not been.
America's crisis is not the existence of terrorists, but the absence of a unified cultural will.
Remember that nature abhors a vacuum?
Because we are lacking that unified cultural will, SOMEONE'S cultural will is going to come rushing in to fill that want. And that "someone" is likely to be named "Muhammed."

There was a time not too long ago when it seemed inconceivable that Europe would ever be at peace. Europe was consumed by war after war and violent revolution after violent revolution. Dictators, monarchies, economic depression, and famine kept Europe trapped in a cycle of violence that seemed to never bring about a balanced solution.
While these obstacles to the peoples of Europe may have eventually worked themselves out in another 100 years and many generations of suffering, would that be preferable to the real balanced peace that was achieved by one brave generation paid for decisively with blood?

The only real peace comes when we are dead.
If things are worth having, if it's worth being free, if it's worth having opportunities, fighting is worth it.
The world will never be at peace. Not in my lifetime, which could be as much as 40 years from now, not in yours. There will always be someone who will take advantage of someone weaker.
When we went to Afghanistan we went after an enemy who had attacked us and imposed peace on about 3,000 of our own. When we went to Iraq we took down a bully who had threatened his neighbors, tried to destroy a neighboring country's oil fields, ignored sanctions, rode roughshod over his own people, killed his own, and who was perceived as a threat.
I believe the war in Iraq has been mismanaged, but I supported the decision to go in and take out Saddam Hussein. I still do.
Peace will come to all of us. What happens between now and then may very well be worth fighting for.

The only reason you can post this mindless blather is because men fought and died to ensure your right to do so. The brave men of the WWII generation fought, bled and died so you can live in peace and freedom and type your bunk without fear of retribution. Had they not fought, had they capitulated to the Nazi madmen, your world would be different. You would be sent to a concentration camp and probably gassed for posting such nonsense.
Yes, as long as there is tyranny, as long as there are butchering thugs like Hitler, Mao, Stalin, or Hussein, there will be the need to fight.
But you need not worry. Brave men and women will always step forward to defend our liberty and our way of life. And you, you can stay safe and comfy knowing they are there and willing to give the last full measure of devotion . These brave soldiers, these gallant warriors, awesome men and women whose names you are unworthy to repeat.

Oh, so much propaganda.
Look, if you have a bunch of irrational zealots that want to kill everybody, you're not going to have peace until you or they are gone.
It's like if you just tried to talk nicely to Hitler. Yeah, eventually there'd be peace, but only because one side or the other had taken everybody out.

Where the hell do you live?
Pull you head out of your Utopian butt. We live in a world where the more you have the more others want to take it away. If we have a perfect society others will want it and will take it by force if not given to them.
Go to the worst neighborhood in your town and go door to door with your peace message. Tell me who is safer you or badass down the street packing the 10mm.
Other than that I agree with you on the Iraqi civil war.

War can bring peace if you kill about 5.9 billion people.. on the other hand those who strive for peace will always be envied and trodden upon by someone else... it's a vicious cycle.

No. Fighting a war in the name of peace is like going to Thailand and buying a young male prostitute for the weekend in the name of morality.
