It's effective, but it's used as a back up in case the condom tears. However, if the condom tears or leaks, there is still a chance of conception. It is NOT 100% effective.

It's around 93% effective, but the condom alone should be fine unless it tears. But be careful, spermicide causes most women to get yeast infections.. yuch!

I've heard that it is 65% effective in preventing conception.
