i owned a 2002 subaru legacy limited and it blew a head gasket at about 75000 mi. this is a known issue for this model year. mine was an external leak, so there was a chance to correct the issue before it was catastrophic. older model years suffered from a devestating internal leak. if you do a google search for "subaru, blown head gasket" it will pull up a big list of links about the problems. i haven't heard if the 2003 or newer engines suffer from the same issue. i have a 2003 now /w 50000 mi on it and no head gasket issue as of this time.

The only time I have ever had problems with a Subaru head gasket is when I either didn't clean the matting surfaces properly or the gasket was an El cheapo and shouldn't have been used to begin with.

i think between 01 and 02 all subarus had head gasket problems, in fact i had to put a additive in the coolant when i changed mine or it voided the warranty, also i would call and check with a dealer i think subaru extended the warranty on that for extended time..
