I am going to assume that your mom had some strong symptoms to go to the er and that she got there not very long ago, which means nobody know anything definite yet. One of the most common things would be she is full of poop...poop can be a mass. Even if the radiologist was really, really sure it was just poop, he would just say something like large mass that appears to be a quantity of fecal material. No matter what it is, it didn't happen overnight and it probably won't fix overnight.
There isn't a lot of information in the question to help explain what the doctors have told your mom. I would like to be more helpful with this, but the info you need is with the doctors and i am going to remind you that at this point the only answer from them is going to be "We aren't sure yet". They know you want an answer, but a quick answer that is a wrong answer only destroys your trust in them. You do not want their best guess, you want objective information to substantiate a medical diagnosis, and that takes time.
So lets do bedside 101 as I assume they have kept your mom in the hospital. Make sure you all take care of the house and each other first so that your mom can relax and not worry about the stuff she isn't doing. Get everyone to where they need to be, get the dishes and laundry done, get everyone fed, and any little ones sat with AT HOME and in bed. Please, please, please do not bring the young kids to the bedside to stay as there are too many germs, they are too restless, they take over the TV or play video games all day. If they are old enough to play video games they are old enough to fold clothes and run a dishwasher. You might want to keep visitors to one or two at a time, it is just to tiring for her to have more. Do not eat at bedside, the smell is either too good of something they can't have or it will make you throw up and gag. (I am very sure they are not feeding your mom, if she is blocked and it can't go down, it will come back up)
Take her a nice pillow from home, as it will be softer then the ones they have, a robe for walking the halls, rubber bottom slippers or sneakers, her own toothbrush and toothpaste, hairbrush, face cream, shampoo ect
The most important thing is for you to settle in and wait for the answers. If your mom has to spend energy calming the family down, it might not be energy she has to spare today. Be respectful to the staff and try to do as they ask. Good luck.

Calm down. It could be an obstruction, in which case they may insert a naso-gastric tube (in through the nose into the stomach) so that nothing else goes down there and high dose antibiotics to try and clear up the infection in the bowel. It could also be a large polyp and that could be benign or it could be cancerous. Calm down until you know for sure what it is.

This is called, quite simply, a bowel obstruction. It can be caused by a number of things.
Surgery may be needed to remove the blockage if other methods do not work. I had one once because of severe dehydration. Once I was rehydrated, the blockage passed on it's own. I never had surgery for it.

it could be a bowel obstruction. meaning a blockage in the bowel. usually the cure for bowel obstructions is surg. they take out the obstruction and sew the bowel back together. i dont believe there are any long term effects other than possibly another obstruction. have her talk to her dr they can assist her with diagnosis and treatment.
