A citrus tree might be a good choice, if you're not far, far, Northern California. They have leaves, like a deciduous tree, but they don't drop their leaves all at once in the fall like most leafy trees. They just drop them, one at a time as they wear out. Citrus trees also grow fairly quickly.
Also, you get fruit! If you're in a location that freezes, a citrus might not be totally happy, and you might not get a lot of fruit. I have a friend in San Jose who has an orange tree and a grapefruit, and they both do very well there. She gets huge, delicious oranges from the orange tree.
