My husband hates the new-fabric feel of his uniform pants. (He's in maintenence at a factory.) Is there any way I can wash them thoroughly enough to soften them and make them more comfortable for him without washing them a dozen times? (I use a coin-op machine and it can add up quick.)
By the way, we have hard water to boot. Would vinegar or baking soda mixed with the regular soap or in the rinse water help? Thanks for any suggestions.

Soak them in your bathtub or kitchen sink with salt and baking soda. Leave them there overnight, then wash as usual (i would use liquid detergent in this situation) and add softener.

My husband has the same complaint, only he works with gas mains and I can't use any fabric softeners because it neutralizes the flame retardant stuff.
My solution is a little old fashioned, but it works. I use old fashioned laundry soda and soak them when they're new, but don't rinse them. Let them hang to dry overnight, then go to the laundromat the next day and use 2 cups of vinegar in the water. The soda will soften the fibers and the vinegar takes away all the starches and chemicals that are used to make new clothes stiff. It's not perfect, but it's awfully good.
