I've been reading up on the differences. What I'm really wondering is if someone off the street with no jeweling experience can tell the difference between a diamond and moissanite?? such as color, clarity, etc. (it's my idea so please no answers about it being "cheap" or "fake" cause I don't care about that)

The moissanite is a darker stone internally. You can figure the color to be much different than a regular diamond. The color scale of a diamond starts off at a "d" which is colorless, and goes down to e,f, g, h, i.. and j k colors are your more promotional color ratings. You actually need a tester to find out the internal stucture of a mossanite stone. A Gemologist can usually spot one with magnification.

It depends. There are some moissanite out there that are so obviously fake it makes me laugh. There is some out there that looks just as good as the real thing. No matter what, they will look different over time. The way they give off light is different and over time as it scratches and wears the moissanite will look more real but the change in the look can also tell people it is a fake or at least raise a red flag. If you are looking to avoid the embaressment of having people know and talk, why not choose something less expensive like sapphires or rubys. Buck tradition and make up a cute story about why you chose something different. Have fun with it and don't stress. Good luck!
