I'm waiting till marriage but what does she mean by sterilized?

When I had my tubes tied, the doctor used the madical term "sterilization". I assumed they mean that they have had a surgical procedure that prohibits them from having children. But if they just say "sterile" it could mean that there is some medical condition that is keeping them from having kids that they didn't have done themselves. Maybe a birth defect or something.
