I am trying to make my own shirts that have that really soft worn-in feel to them. Any ideas? I saw something in Men's Health Magazine that said to use a mixture of salt and washing soda. THIS DOES NOT WORK. It made them more stiff if anything.
Thanks!

Lots of fabric softener, and lots of cycles in the washing machine. If you want to give them an extra beating, get a washable garment bag (like the ones they have for delicates) and shove them in there with some small/medium sized river rocks (you can get them in craft stores, they're nice and smooth so they wont rip up your shirts but will have a grinding effect that'll soften the fabric and make it look worn), then run the whole bundle through the wash a few times.

Drying will also add wear, and you can put the rock bundle in there too- just throw some towels in as well to soften the load and make it less noisy.

Just get the right fabric! Look for a fabric that's comfy, soft, but strong enough to hold together. Then I would reccomend "wearing it in" with washing. And isn't there a such thing as fabric softener? Try that.

The key is to use 100% cotton tee shirts that haven't been treated to resist staining or shrinking and to repeat the wash cycle w/ hot water several times before putting them in the dryer.

to wear in shirts you all ready have there are a few things you can do. first of all wear them A LOT. so they can sort of stretch and fade. also try sandpaper, or something else harsh, over any graphics to wear it away a bit. if you want distressing more than that you can drop small bits of bleach to change the color all togther. also try sleeping in them so they can get extra abuse.

good luck!
