I have a Mazda 1998 626, 4 cyl car. I just noticed that the radiator overflow tank was almost empty and promptly filled it up with a 50/50 antifreeze-water mixture. The question now is, should I also fill up the radiator directly or should filling the tank be enough?

Thanks in advance...

The best way to fill you antifreeze is to take the cap off and start the car, add antifreeze untill the thermostate opens then stop and put the cap on and add some to the overflow.

To answer your question. the overflow is connected to and higher up then the radiator so if it is low what ever you put into the overflow will go into the radiator anyway. Just because the overflow is empty doesn't mean you coolant is low...just to let you know.

hope this helps

When it is cold fill the radiator then fill the tank about halfway between the 2 lines. check it in a couple of days to see where it settles out. you should not need to burp it unless it was quite low before.

The radiator will get its fill from the overflow tank.

Sure it doesn't hurt to open the radiator cap and check. But be sure the engine has completely cooled down. Never open the radiator cap on a hot engine!!

No. If you still get heat, the level didn't drop in the rad. The overflow would have to be empty before the rad level would have dropped. If you want to check, make sure the engine is really cool before you pop the cap, but I wouldn't bother.
