When my car is stopped, at a complete stop, but still in Drive, I hear a grinding sound. If I switch into neutral it stops.

ANy ideas?

My car is a 1999 Dodge Ram Truck.

It might be as simple as a loose heat shield around the exhaust rattling..

It could be your transmission in Drive and your foot on the brake. Your engine may be idling too high and the sound you hear is the clutches in the transmission wanting to do their job. It may be the brakes actually doing their job. What is the rpm when you have it in Drive and your foot on the brake? It should be around 500. What is the rpm in Neutral? It should be around 600-650.

An automatic transmission works on the principle of viscosity. The torque converter is essentially two plates that slide against each other. When the rpm reaches a certain level, the viscosity of the fluid between them causes the torque converter to "lock up" and send the torque to the clutches. The clutches press together and ultimately transmit the torque down the driveshaft and off you go. You may have your rpm too high at idle and the car is essentially fighting itself to go and to stay stopped at the same time, moreso than it should.

Sounds like a possible transmission problem, like a broken gear tooth or bearings going kaput. Get it checked before your truck goes kaput.

my guess is either you need a new transmission or you have an engine tap. have you had these things checked yet?
