Many major US internet providers and email gateways use Eastern time as a default. It doesn't mean the sender is in that timezone just that the messages went through a server there.

That means that the person sent that message at 12:24 PM Eastern Daylight Time.
There are about four time zones in the USA. There's Eastern Standard Time (EST) which is, if you live in some parts of the Midwest and further to the South going to the right, that is the time you're on. Right now, i'm in Michigan, so it is 5:00 EST.
There is CST which stands for Central Standard Time. This is the time you're under if you're in some parts of the Midwest and the South that fall right in the middle of the country. States like Illinois and Texas fall under CST. Where they are now, it is 4:00 CST. Go back one hour.
Now, you've got MST which stands for Mountain Standard Time. This is the time you are under if you're in some parts of the Rocky Mountain States (Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, and Montana) and some Southwestern States (Arizona). Where they are now, it is 3:00 MST. Go back two hours.
Finally you have PST which stands for Pacific Standard Time. This is the time you are undre if you're in the West Coast States (California, Oregon, Washington; Nevada is also included). Where they are now, it is 2:00 PST. Go back three hours.
I hope this helps.

EDT is the Eastern Time Zone during Daylight Savings Time, because not all countries follow daylight savings.
