i live in a newer home and it looks like someone threw something against the corner of the wall and now a big chip is there and there's some steel exposed...how can i cheaply cover this up so that my landlord doesn't charge me???

The metal is called "Corner Bead" and its put on all corners of sheetrock. Buy a small tub of joint compound and a broad knife (wide putty knife) and put 3 light coats on lightly sanding in between coats and then spot prime and paint Good luck Les the painter

Give us more info, is it an outside wall or inside wall? What is covering it now?

You can get some drywall putty, it works really well, then just touch up with some paint.

use lightweight spackle. after it dries, sand lightly and repaint
