My grandmother used to do this.
They allow the legs to slide across the ground. The rubber tips that the walkers come with don't slide very well.

Walkers are made with rubber stoppers on the bottom. They wear out so tennis balls last longer.
I worked with disabled people who used walkers.

Tennis balls help the walker not scratch floors. it is like a protective layer from the sharpe metal.

I have no idea but have always wondered. It seems like it would slip more easily with a tennis ball than a rubber stopper.

Safety reasons. I saw a lady in the parking lot yesterday and it was icy, her walker had wheels. She was alone, I thought it was an accident ready to happen.
