Hunter Thompson is a great writer. His style reminds me a lot of another great American writer Kurt Vonnegut Jr.
I would describe him as Kurt Vonnegut on acid. I am not saying this to draw anything away from his own work. I just get the same tong-in creak vibe/fulfillment out of reading either of them.
If someone would ask me to define Americana in the 70s and early 80s - I'd say go read some Hunter S. Thompson!

Hunter S. Thompson is/was one of our finest American writers.
I re-read Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas once a year and Hell's Angels every few years (my two favorites). Joseph Heller is excellent as well, but neither would get my vote as best author (but it's all a matter of individual taste anyhow).

Catch 22 is one of my all time favorite books. I've tried to avoid Hunter Thompson.

Hunter S. Thompson is an ICON! Love every one of his books and movies. The best may well be 'Where the buffalo may roam", but love both Fear and Loathing books.
