You could go around to garage sales and leave a card that says:
"Leftover books from your sale? Don't just dump them, call me first. I buy books by the batch." Include your phone number.

Also, try eBay, there's often lots of used paperback books (like mysteries) up for cheap.

Call your local library and ask if they have any books that are not in circulation and request to purchase them.

Real auctions, although your per-book price may be cheaper at a thrift store if you don't care about age or condition.
