Ok, i'm taking a bus trip from des moines iowa to joliet illinois. I've never done this before so i don't know what really goes on, but i looked online and it says that it will take 10 hours and 10 minutes, but it would only take like.. five fours to get there if you drove it yourself. what makes it take so long? also, has an area that says "tranfers" and then under it it says "2" does that mean i have to get off then get onto another bus? where do they usually stop to do this? Sorry if i sound stupid i just need to know all the details about it..

The bus takes longer than driving because it stops at a bunch of little towns for breaks / to pick up people. Or the roads are a bit different than what you would drive in your car.

I took the greyhound to the next city over one time - normally the drive takes 1.5 hours, but because I took the bus it was a 4 hour ride. The bus took all these weird roads that I normally would not drive.

I would avoid Greyhound at all costs
they have a bad habit of leaving your stranded or making you
stand on the bus,,
there is an alternative for your -take the Burlington Trailways
bus from Des Monies to Chicago then you can take
a [metrarail] commuter train (either from La Sallie station (frequent
departures or from Union station)
to Joliet..
the bus departs Des Monies at 8:25am
arrives Chicago at 4:15 and on ONE BUS
NO TRANSFER NEEDED ,,(well until you get to Chicago that is)

sounds like you will have to get off and on twice -

remember - the bus just doesn't go from Des Moines
directly to Joliet - it stops along the way

so you will learn the difference between express - and milk run

Express from Orlando to Jacksonville - no stops -interstate driving 2 hrs
Milk Run - same points - back roads - 10 city stops - 4 hrs
but you get to see a lot of the country - but it's hurry up and wait

also - you will not be in the greatest area of town -
you WILL have to buy the bus food - because nothing will be in walking distance from any station, unless you bring your own

enjoy!

Buses have to stop so people can eat stretch etc. also they stop in a lot of small towns so people can get on and off. Yes that means you might have to transfer buses , just make sure your luggage transfers with you try to watch it it will be under the bus. Take a portable dvd and headphones have fun hope this helps

Before you get on the bus, go to the Greyhound Ticket Window and ask the ticket clerk your questions.

Don't forget your questions. Write them on a sheet of paper, so you don't forget anything you want to ask and have made clear to you.

I would consider using Burlington Trailways as they are more reliable and comfortable than Greyhound. They provide daily route service along that corridor.
