I have owned a mac for two years now and have not had one problem with a virus or spyware getting on it. Norton seems to find and eliminate viruses on my computer every week! And I have to run spyware sweeper every few days to wipe off all the spyware that creeps onto windows.
So I would say the chances of you getting a virus on a mac is rare, but not impossible.
I really love my mac!

It is far less likely that a Mac will get a virus from anywhere than with a Windows PC, becuase as there are more people using Windows than Mac, there are more viruses made for it.
Theres always a risk though with any OS so be careful and always use antivirus protection software and a firewall.

There have been absolutely no documented viruses for MacOS X so far. But that's no guarantee someone won't come up with one.
You could, of course, easily install and run some program that does something nasty to your machine. Technically, this would be a trojan horse, not a virus, and it probably won't infect other computers except if other people also willingly install it (because they think it's something they want).
