Interior Minister Mr Sarkozy is the UMP party candidate and is already ahead in the polls to be the next president so Mr Chirac is just doing what's in the party and his own best interests which is support Sarkozy.
Doesn't much matter about the history between the two men or that Sarkozy is trying to distanced himself from the unpopular Chirac.
