I live in Eastern Indiana and want to put groundcover around some bushes and trees in a confined area. I want something that will not strangle the trees and bushes out but will look nice and take over the area so I don't have to mulch. Thanks for any ideas.

Just to clarify when I say groundcover I mean a ground covering plant.

Vinca Minor (periwinkle or Myrtle) would probably good for you there.. it's not a climber and covers shady areas nicely.

There is a low growing jasmine which works well around the trees an bushes at the hospital where I work. It is a waxy plant with long hanging tendrils which sprout a new plant. It is available verywhere, home depot, kmart, walmart. They keep it well watered and it is in semi shade. It would do well up north It grows to about 8" hight and spreads around.

You can plant Lily of the valley, virginia bluebells, silver lamium--all bloom in spring and are ok for shade to part shade and are ground covers. ALSO you can plant reblooming daylily's for color and plant some hostas.
