Should the federal government substantially raise the so-called “sin taxes” on tobacco products and alcoholic beverages to increase federal revenues and to discourage the use of these products?

No! They should be taxed at the same rate as everything else. It's not constitutional to target groups for additional income.

It's one source of income.

And if the government is going to get into the business of telling people what they should put in their bodies, then at least a tax is less intrusive than an outright ban.

Personally, I think the govt should drop 90% of its laws.
But then, I don't like telling other people how to live their lives.

Why not? They're certainly not necessary to survive - in fact their use shortens life, dries the skin to increase the look of aging, produces smelly breath, and makes most people act like idiots.

All it would encourage would be an increase in the already existing black market for these items.
