when you cervix starts to weaken or thin out, the water bag becomes more droopy. The pressure of the baby plus contractions causes the water to break. But sometimes, as in my case, my water didn't break on its own. The doctor had to do it.

Sometimes because of infection in the uterus, And do to a lack of space in the uterus, and more than likely because of hormones from the fetus signaling the mother's body to start labor, but sometimes when labor fails to start the doctor breaks the bag of water artificially.

It can break for all of the reasons every one listed. From the baby moving down, the doctor doing it, etc. etc. etc. I got induced and my water finally broke about 9 hours afterward, it felt like a balloon popped inside my vajayjay! I don't think it hurts for every one though!
