Honestly speaking the term expensive varies from person to person. I am in Japan and if I tell you in my experience I will say, first of all you should know where are you going to stay, then how many days? Tokyo is a big city. you should have a plan.
I suggest you must carry 1000 US$ for 15 days trip.
Here is some break up which will help you to understand.
transportation is basically done by Trains. There is Japan railway minimum fare I can say around 1.25 US$ or other trains could be 1 US$. for one stop usually. But if travel more it will increase.
Taxis are costly specially at night.
Buses take time, not easily available.
Food, MC Donald one set can say 5 US$ or more if you like
Normal Family Restaurants7-10 US$ or more if you want
Coca Cola can 120 Japanese Yen
Mineral water 500 ml 150 Japanese Yen

Hi,
I'm from the US, but I now live in Tokyo and it's extremely expensive. It really just depends on what you're interested in...
Clubbing: You can hit clubs/bars/lounges and drinks will run you anywhere from $7-$25 each. There are some really high-end places that will also get you with a cover charge or seating fee. A few (3) drinks at a high-end club can easily set you back $150. Pricey but you're in Tokyo so have fun! In Roppongi, Shibuya, and Shinjuku you can find many clubs with drinks around $6-10. A lengthy stay at these clubs can also easily set you back $150. Keep an eye out for happy hour specials because drinks normally run about $3-5. What type of music do you like?
Sightseeing: Best bet for sightseeing is to do some research before you get to Tokyo and determine what you'd like to see. When you get to Tokyo get a subway and JR train map and have fun. Check out japan-guide.com for some info...

I've lived in both Tokyo and Los Angeles in the past and I would say the cost/expenses in Tokyo and a major U.S. city like L.A. or New York City are pretty similar.
However, there's a difference between 'living' and 'visiting', and 'visiting' will require a bit more money since you would be doing things like sightseeing and perhaps buying things you wouldn't normally buy if you knew you would be living there for months and months.
I would probably bring $1,000-$1,500 (excluding transporation and hotel fees).
Enjoy your time in Tokyo! I'm sure you'll have a blast.

Tokyo is the capital of Japan, and the place where over 13 million people live, making it one of the most populous cities in the world but also, a big city to visit, find out more with hotelbye . Most of the city was devastated by the Great Kanto Earthquake of 1923, and then again by the bombing in the WWII, however, Tokyo was able to achieve a remarkably rapid recovery both times. The main attraction of Tokyo is the Imperial Palace with its beautiful 17th-century parks surrounded by walls and moats. The palace is still in use by the Imperial family.

This place is very expensive don't be fooled by what others say. Look at the prices of things that you purchase where you at. Now take that price and double or almost triple it and that's about the average cost of things in Japan. The average night club will cost you $20 and up (epect to pay 25-40) just to get in. Drinks are $5 and up. Love Hotels you can stay in for $40 and up but regular hotels cost about $80 and up. I recommend riding the trains to save on parking and toll fees. Simple colored T-shirt like the ones you see at Walmart or Foot Locker sale for like $60. Pizza$25-$40. Don't get me wrong this place is beautiful and I love it. The people are nice and friendly but nothing is free here. If you do make here budget yourself because you can blow $300 or more on just one weekend easy.

Tokyo is about the same as if you were to buy stuff in LA.. sometimes a bit more. So you might want to bring about the same amount you spend a week here in LA.. maybe a bit more... cause you do end up giving the exchange places a bit of money for exchanging your american dollars to yen..

Keep in mind that Tokyo is EXPENSIVE. I would think that absolute, bare bones minimum to take would be at least 10,000 yen perday (about $80-$85 a day) and that will be eating at convenience stores, few if any souvenirs, and frugal drinking at the bars. I personally recommend that you take more money however, and stay away from the bars in Kabuki-cho. Those can bankrupt you fast, ($10 Budwiser, PER BOTTLE!)

When I went to Tokyo for 14 days, I took 2000.00 for spending. I went on a massive spending spree and came back with 800.00$ so I'd say take about 1000$ (not including hotel and airfare). Clubs can get expensive and trains can as well (depending on where you go). Maybe allow yourself $100 per day.
I went to Osaka recently for one week and it took up $1200 with hotel costs and train costs. That was more expensive than Tokyo.

Average hotel cost is 180 to 300. Unless you stay in a capsule.
Average dinner is 30 to 50 unless you like eating shitty food all the time. don't expect a traditional sushi dinner for two to be under 150.
Average train is about 6.50
Average taxi is about 10
It will cost you 30 just to get from the airport to your hotel
I think whoever said 2 grand is pretty close.
