I used to prefer alt. rock bands...but now I find I prefer indie groups. I just can't really tell what the difference is!

An indie band is much cooler because they can call themselves Independent.

An alternative rock band is a rock band that is with a major label and they might get "labeled" mainstream! Oh no!

Forget genres, listen to what you like!

Indie's just a band that is signed with a independent label as opposed to a major one. It's now associated with bands such as The Shins, Death Cab for Cutie and even Snow Patrol (which is signed on a major record company).
Alterbative Rock is teh genre that can't really be put into any subcatagory of rock and is generally softer and more melodic that other types of rock, ie. Radiohead, REM, Incubus.

I agree with the guy above me. But "Indie" was originally, like in the 90's, referring to a band that was independently run...basically, it had a small, independent recording label. Nowadays, bands slap that label on themselves and are immediately grouped into a large fanbase...

Also most "indie" music today, is either very experimental, or new folk sounding music.

indie bands tend to not have a label, unsigned, or have and autonomous label. while it includes the certainly track they are incredibly plenty the comparable. sometimes selection rock could be slightly extra 'not straightforward' than indie. Over all there isn't various a distinction >.<
