The favourite cause for this is that your speakers have been accidentally muted.

Go to Start > Control Panel > Sounds and Audio devices. Left click to open the panel. If there's a tick in the 'Mute' box click in the box to clear it and the speakers should then work. Make sure the volume is fully turned up.

Another possible cause is if your speakers have their own power supply which has accidently been turned off.

If none of these solve the problem, go to Start > Help and Support > Trouleshoot Sound and follow through the steps given there

follow the above advice but if that doesn't work check to make sure it's your sound card not your speakers. Getting new speakers is easier and cheaper than buying a new sound card.
