Garden tractors are heavier duty, generally with pto capabilities. Lawn tractors are for light duty only.

You might mean lawn mower vs garden tractor. If my assumption is correct the lawn mower sometimes can only be used to cut lawns and they do it very well and quickly. They are the ones that have the engine in the back of the operator and the operator is seated at controls forward of center of the mower.
The garden tractor can be used to pull implements and work in the garden, but it also can mow the lawn. It mows a bit slower but is more versatile, in fact you can put a snow blower or push blade on it. The garden tractor is sometimes less expensive than the lawn mower described above.

a lawn tractor is a ride on mower. a garden tractor can have different implements attached to do things like rototilling, plowing and also can have a mowing attachment.

lawn tractors are for mowing - garden tractors have capacity for attachments to plow, till,etc.
