So I just read all about the rat poisoned pet food and I am sooo disgusted! First of all, what kind of idiot would want to poison a bunch of random pets? That's the dumbest, most pointless thing I've ever heard. Secondly, how do I know if my dog has been poisoned enough to cause him serious harm? He hasn't shown any outright signs of rapidly failing health, but he HAS gotten sick and puked twice in the last 2 weeks and he's been eating grass a lot (which I know signifies an upset stomach). Should I take him to the vet and get him checked out just in case or are the symptoms of the poisoned animals much more severe?

Dogs can suffer from renal failure at any time due to any variety of reasons - not just the pet food scare.

If he has eaten any of the foods listed in the recall (www.menufoods.com/recall) , take him in for diagnostic tests regardless of whether he 'seems' fine. The symptoms can be very mild and hard to detect.

If he is really behaving differently than usual, take him in for diagnostic tests as well as he may be sick for different reasons even if he hasn't been exposed to the contaminated food.

If you're waiting to see if 'serious harm' has been caused, severe symptoms of renal failure don't usually manifest until it's too late to save the animal, or involves several thousand dollars worth of drips, kidney meds and the like.

The first question to answer is, did your pet eat one of the brands listed as contaminated? You can go to www.menufood.com/recall/press_re... to see if your pet food is listed as contaminted or you can call Menu Food toll free: 866 895 2708.

If you have used any of those foods, then I would take the pet immediately to the vet. The problem is that the damage can be done before the dog even shows signs of a problem.

I would take him to the vet even if it not showing sign. It could be causing the in his system and you will not even know it. I took 2 cats and one puppy in to the vet. Vet did testing on them and found one had some damage and the other two were fine.Someone did poison that food : tainted means (to contaminate )

It NEVER hurts to take him to the vet to get him checked.

I don't think that the poisioning was intentionally done by someone, but still, that doesn't make it any less horrible.

Check here to see if the food you feed your pet is on this list.
