If you use the crossover cable between to two PC's and try a "direct link" setup within windows, if the game supports this. A second idea is to get hold of a little hub and use normal ethernet cables and build a small home network and then play the game. Use the windows home networking wizard if your not sure how to build the network. The router is only useful if you need to route or if it will act as the hub for the home network. Good luck.

Your Windows Firewall will block the signal:

Run the game
Launch the Lan as normal
Try to set up the connection

Now press:

Alt and Tab together

The game should minimize.
Below the game there should be:

A Windows firewall exception box
Click yes to make the game an exception

Now close the game and start the lan again , should work.

If you can not get the game to drop down i.e alt and Tab then go to :

Control panel
Firewall (Under Security center)
Click the exception tab
Browse for the game

I hope this helps
