first up, to Winter...Mugsy was 5'3".
now being 5"5" or 5'6" is not the problem. it's about heart and that can not be measured in any increments. if you have heart, motivation, drive... you can't lose. set yourself a goal. if making the team is your goal, then cool.
after you set the goal, start taking measure to reach for it.
practice, practice, practice. get used to playing with guys taller than you are. my best friends that i played with were between 5'11" and 6'3". the more successful i became at learning how to score against them, and defend against them... actually playing against anyone shorter than they were, was like going on a rampage.
exercise plenty. lift weight. get strong. i would work out for an hour and a half, and finish with a run. the running kept me fast, but the weights made me strong. i remember once posting up a guy that was at least 6'1. he thought it was funny until i spun on him on scored...so it's definitely within your reach. all you gotta do is go get it. GOOD LUCK!

Hey goog,

i played ball in high school and i was barley 5 feet at the time and weighed less than 100 lbs. (I'm a short asian guy who wears glasses and most people would say looks "nerdy" but i can ball with the brothers at the park).

Work on your outside shooting, ballhandling, and play tough defense. In my first game i ripped a rebound from this guy like 5 inches taller than me and my coach gave me more playing time because of my intensity and ferocious "D". i got a reputation for taking charges and knocking down threes.

Being short is often a disadvantage but typically it means your faster than other people, so work on a killer jumper and then you can use that with a pump fake and get to the rack. If you can knock down free throws and are a good team player- most teams need those things. Learn how to play good team defense, and be a good team player offensively as well.

Good luck...

Hope that helps.

Kindly,

Nickster

You should try and find some old tapes of Spud Webb, Mugsey Bogues and Earl Boykins. All aren't your prototypical basketball athlete but yet found their way into the limelight. Study their games and add a little style of your own to separate yourself from the pack. Besides that, practice, practice, practice. Practice what you're already good at and practice what you're not so good at 6 times as much. Sound good?

yea you really need to work on speed, shooting, ball handling and passes. if you show up at tryouts and are able to use great court vision to move the ball, the coaches will be impressed. you don't always have to be the tall guy in the post scoring points over other guys. If you know how to dribble to find your own shot on the perimeter or know how to see the court well to get other guys the ball, you can be just as effective. It will take alot of work though, depending on how good you are.

Point guard is where you will probably wind up playing. As others have said keep practicing but also become a student of the game. Learn what works in certain game situations and what does not. This will compliment your skills and make you a more valuable player.

study tjuan porter of oregon at 5'6" one of the smallest ever to play at this level. he more that any one else ive seen play other than mugsy boges uses his strengths rather than playing to his opponents strengths. he is deadly on the offensive end and has learned to be able to consistantly hit a shot from anywhere, and i mean anywhere, on the floor and has an incredibly quick release. and he can handle the ball better than just about any one including the nba. would be a very good study for you and a great mentor. he loves kids and goes out of his way to help in any way he can. you might send him an email at goducks.com. good luck to you and oh yeah GO DUCKS!!

You make up for your height by being extremely good in everything else you do. Remember Spud Webb? Handle the ball well, pass well, shoot well and be able to hit your free throws. Just hustle. You'll make it.

first thing get ur hight off ur mind cuz that is wats stopping u from trying out for the team. second of all u don't have to be tall to play basketball. with ur hight u can be a point guard. u just got to have good dribbling skills and just practice ur shooting and u have all u need to paly basketball.

The key in basketball is not your height, its how you can play. I am 5'7" and i am goin as a walk on at Michigan State University. They wanted me because i had the ability to score as well as play defense. So my idea about your case is try hard, and work on your defense ability. You will play if you practice.

Go find a basket and shoot 200 3-pointers a day. And practice your ballhandling a LOT!
