I just read this article
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070323/us_nm/usa_gay_retirees_dc
Its about offering low cost housing to Homosexual retiree's and they are using state funds to do it. I thought this was illegal but after just reading Title VIII of the Civil Rights Act of 1968 (Fair Housing Act), as amended, prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of dwellings, and in other housing-related transactions, based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex, familial status (including children under the age of 18 living with parents of legal custodians, pregnant women, and people securing custody of children under the age of 18), and handicap (disability). No where does it say you cant discriminate based on sexual orientation...so since they are doing that, can i go out tommorrow to rent out one of my houses and say "No homosexuals are allowed to rent this house" legally?

Thanks for your answers....I wouldnt expect CA to be one of those states that allows discrimination based on Sexual orientation, but if the homosexuals are doing it, I imagine heteros can too.

You are talking about a piece of federal legislation and your interpretation of it is correct. But like Coragryph said, there are some states which will prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation even though federal law does not.

Theres another thing about that, since it is under national law of what he^^^ just said then how can the states make addition to it? It would be like giving restrictions or defining what cannot be descriminated. You can descriminate a pregnant lady if shes under 3 months pregnant or if the person is exactly 18 or turned 18. Get my drift? Basically this should be a national law, not a state law to where they can adjust it or add on to it.

It depends on the state, since federal laws do not prohibit it.

Some states allow discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Some do not.

It depends on your state. In Florida you can do exactly that provided that you don't own more than four rental properties and are not using a licensed professional (realtor).

If it is yours, you can rent to whomever you choose. If you don't have more than a few rentals, that law doesn't apply to you.
